Iraqi Christians: a long history
Ephrem-Isa Yousef
The Christian community in Iraq had forged many centuries before the advent of Islam. In fact, from the third century AD Roman, she was already in place. Its priests and monks play a role in the circulation of knowledge in scientific exchanges. It will be the first to revolt against papal authority in constituting the V th century, an independent church based on the doctrine of the Patriarch Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople. In the Sassanid period, Iraq is almost Christian. The reality that follows on the various churches in Iraq will always be complex. They ignore the Crusaders and feel their presence. But in the thirteenth century th arrival of the Mongol Tamerlane leave only a few islands in Mesopotamia Nestorians. In 1552, members of this church will meet in Rome to form the Chaldean Church. These Christians in Iraq, and despite some moments of respite, such as the Sultan Abdul Mejid, which, in the nineteenth century establishes the equality of religions, will suffer the vagaries of history. After the Second World War, they were evaluated at 3, 5% of the population, and recent manipulations of religious movements in Iraq, precipitate their exile. How not to reflect this presence that was actively involved in building the Iraqi way of thinking?
